Guns are for Killing. The Law Says So.
Some advance the argument that a person should be allowed to carry a gun, with no restrictions, in order to "protect oneself".
How does a gun protect someone?
Displaying a gun may deter an attacker from attacking. Using a gun on an attacker may disable or kill the attacker.
But displaying a gun deters only if the threat of deadly force is credible. Therefore a gun is useful as a deterrent only if it is used to kill. Police are trained in this. They are not trained to shoot an arm or a leg, they are trained to shoot at the center of the body, where the vital organs are.
Stand Your Ground laws also acknowledge a gun's purpose by decriminalizing murder by civilians under certain vague conditions, that is, deadly force is justified if one "feels threatened".
Further, a gun has virtually no other use than to kill. You cannot use a gun to butter bread or cut up a steak and convey it to your mouth. A gun is useless to pry open a paint can or change your car's tire. An arsenal of guns are of no use in building a house, or a car, or a computer, or developing a vaccine. A gun will not give you a ride to work or the hospital, or take you to a romantic spot with your lover.
